Guest Post: Make Your Indie Novel the Best It Can Be

Joyce Shafer is an innovative freelance editor who offers a wide range of author services and coaching. I was lucky enough to connect with her back when I was working on my first novel, Night Machines. Joyce did a comprehensive critique of the manuscript. Not only did she mark the entire thing up, she sent me several pages of useful information about writing style and grammar rules. Her remarks improved my writing immensely, and I use the information to this day. But most of all, Joyce delivered her editorial assistance in words of great enthusiasm and encouragement. I think her positive attitude did more for me as a writer than anything else.

Joyce is also a literary entrepreneur who pioneered the self-publishing world back in its early days. She is an amazing resource for indie authors, and I have followed her career over the years to see what she'll come up with next. (You can read about her newest innovation, "The Chapter-by-Chapter Get-Your-Book-Written Writer's Incentive Program," here. Sounds great for first-time authors or writers struggling to get that book written!)

So as you can imagine, I was thrilled when Joyce invited me to write a column for her blog. You can read my guest post, "Make Your Indie Novel the Best It Can Be," here. It's a collection of advice I have assembled from my experiences as an indie author. Check it out – you may learn something useful!

"Having a heroine that isn’t afraid to stand out and be different was refreshing."

Literary R&R is one of my favorite book review blogs. A team of book lovers combine literary sense with good judgement, class, and humanity to create reliable book reviews. I sent them a copy of Underlake, hoping they would have time to squeeze it in. As a totally awesome start to this week, I see they have posted a 5 STAR review this morning! I couldn't be more proud.

One of my favorite excerpts:

"Underlake is a complex story written to delight and empower the reader. … I felt it was beautifully done for girls searching for their own voice. Katie is a young girl that most girls can identify with as she struggles with following the crowd versus personal values. Combining the mythical with a coming-of-age story, and a nod to Christian fiction, Ms. Heavey writes a story that captivates the reader."

THANK YOU Literary R&R!

" Underlake is a great contribution to YA literature."

I am beyond thrilled with this important 5-star review from Conservative Teachers of America, an organization that, among other things, evaluates reading choices for teens.

CTA recognizes what I was trying to do – challenge young readers, even as I loved to be challenged at that age:

Heavey’s writing is impressive. It’s rare that I pick up a young adult book that has such excellent word choice. I was seeing words that were new to me up until the end of the story. Usually, mass market YA has the same old boring word choice in the writing.

Indeed, CTA goes on to concur with my personal view, that most kids today would really appreciate being held to a higher standard, both intellectually and morally. It's very gratifying to see a professional educators' organization recommend my novel as an option for such young adults. Thank you!

Reviews are starting to come in.

So far, Underlake has eight reviews on Amazon – not too bad for an indie book available for less than two months. Since my free giveaway ended over a week ago, I am hoping to see some more reviews come online soon. For now, I guess I'll be satisfied with quality over quantity: the average rating is 4.8/5 stars!

Loving some of the review titles:

"Dreamy, mythical and wise 'coming of age' story"

"the mystical, the magical, the mundane – the crazy chaos of life in the balance"

"Captivating"

"Amazing!!!!!"

If you shop for books the way I do, by reading reviews first, you can check out Underlake reviews here.
